Project Management for Construction and Building Crews
A building job is a chain: order, deliver, build, inspect, sign off, next. Most project tools talk about sprints and tickets. A crew thinks in phases, trades and inspections. The tool should use your words.
Use your own words
Start from the construction template and the whole workspace speaks it: a Build contains Phases, a Phase contains Trades, and the work is a Job with steps. Columns read Planned, Ordered, On site, Inspection and Signed off. If your crew says something different, rename any word.
A simple structure that works
- Build: one per house or site.
- Phase: foundation, structure, services, finishing.
- Inspection: a dated milestone at the end of each phase.
- Jobs: what each trade actually does, with a foreman on each.
Keep the paperwork with the job
Add fields for the things you always track, like site, budget and supplier. Keep an inspection checklist as a doc right next to the phase, and tick it off on site from a phone. The plan, the checklist and the photos are in one place instead of three chats.
Show the client, not the mess
Clients mostly want to know whether it is on track and what is next. A roadmap view of the phases answers that in one look. Keep the day-to-day detail for the crew.
