Board or List: Which View Should You Use?
A board and a list show the same tasks. Neither is better. They answer different questions, so the useful skill is knowing which question you are asking.
| You want to know | Use |
|---|---|
| What is stuck, and where? | Board |
| What moves next? | Board |
| Who owns what, and by when? | List |
| Everything due this week, sorted? | List |
| How much is waiting at each stage? | List grouped by status |
| Does the schedule hold together? | Gantt or Roadmap |
Boards are for flow
Columns make a queue visible. If Review has nine cards and Done has one, you can see the problem without reading a word. Add a column in the place that needs it, give it a colour, and add a task at the bottom of any column.
Lists are for detail
A list is a table: title, person, date, priority, points. Group it by status and you get the board's structure with the list's density. Sort by due date and you have a to-do list. It is the view for planning meetings and for people who think in rows.
Mix them
- Run the day from the board.
- Plan the week from the list.
- Save the filters you use often as a view, so a click gets you back.
Both read the same data, so a change in one shows in the other straight away.
See your own tasks as a board and as a list.
